Session Descriptions
"Aquatic Rehabilitation: The Scientific Rationale"
by Bruce E. Becker, MD
The aquatic
environment can be used as a primary rehabilitation tool, or may be used
adjunctively to land based rehabilitation programs. This lecture will
give an in-depth understanding of the fundamental scientific rationale
behind the use of aquatic rehabilitation using current research into the
biophysiologic changes seen in the aquatic environment.
At the conclusion of the
lecture, participants will:
•
Understand the basic biophysiologic effects of aquatic rehabilitation;
• Translate these physiologic principles into clinical practice
situations;
• Adapt therapeutic programs for a diverse group of clinical
rehabilitation patients, and
• Describe aquatic techniques for specific populations.

"Using the Water to Treat Lymphedema"
by Lynette Jamison, MOT, OTR
This session will provide the information
necessary for a therapist to develop and implement an aquatic treatment
plan that will augment a full lymphedema management
program. Participants will be provided with the didactic evidence to
support the use of an aquatic treatment plan for this patient
population. Anatomy, physiology and some possible pathologies of the
lymph system will be discussed. Treatment and after care protocols will
be presented including manual lymph drainage, aquatic exercise and use
of compression bandages and garments. Specific exercises will be
practiced in water. Case studies will be presented and information
regarding specific training for manual lymph drainage and purchasing
compression products will be provided.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
•
Describe the pathways of the lymph system.
•
Justify using aquatic exercise versus land based exercise using
evidenced based information, and
•
Develop an aquatic exercise program for a patient with lymphedema to
enhance lymph drainage and circulation.

"The Halliwick Concept:
Applications in Neurorehabilitation"
by Peggy Schoedinger, PT
In this session, you
will learn to use The Halliwick Concept as the foundation for your
aquatic therapy treatment programs. You will learn to maximize the
benefits of aquatic therapy to help normalize tone, facilitate righting
and equilibrium reactions, improve trunk and proximal stability, improve
posture, increase ROM, increase strength, and improve functional skills,
including transfers and gait. Videos will be used to demonstrate
Halliwick in use with patients with a variety of neurological
conditions.
Upon completion, participants will
be able to:
•
Utilize Halliwick to help normalize
tone, facilitate righting and equilibrium reactions, improve trunk and
proximal stability, improve posture, increase ROM, increase strength,
and improve functional skills, including transfers and gait.
•
Utilize metacentric effects,
turbulence and buoyancy in a variety of positions to create exercises
and activities that are unique to the aquatic environment.
•
Demonstrate handling skills for
patients in the water that maximize each patient’s learning experience.
•
Understand how to appropriately and
maximally challenge each patient in the aquatic environment.
•
Apply the Halliwick Concept to
improve component skills and functional skills for neurological patient
populations.

"Aquatic Therapy and the
Upper Extremity"
by Lori Thein Brody, PT, PhD, SCS
At the conclusion, participants will be able to:
• Select appropriate patients with upper extremity dysfunction for aquatic
rehabilitation intervention;
•
Choose impairments and functional limitations involving the upper
extremity that are amenable to treatment using the unique properties of
the water;
• Formulate a treatment program for upper extremity problems
integrating aquatic rehabilitation with a land-based program, and
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the aquatic rehabilitation
program and determine discharge.

"Using Aquatic Therapy to Progress Motor Control
and Sensory Integration in Children"
by Bess Maxwell, PT, PhD
This session will review normal development and sensory
integration and describe how a child learns to move in the water.
Concepts of
abnormal
sensory integration and motor control will be discussed with emphasis on
how this changes the child’s mobility in the water. Methods for using
water activities to advance a child’s motor skills will be presented.
Photos, video, demonstration and practice in the water will be used to
explain concepts.
Upon completion, participants will
be able to:
•
Describe normal
progression of water adjustment, vertical and horizontal movement in the
water, and motor patterns used to propel;
•
Describe
how dysfunctional sensory integration and motor control
change movement in the water;
•
Demonstrate knowledge of methods that can be used to teach a child with
sensory integration and
motor control
problems how to move successfully in the water, and
•
Discuss the therapeutic benefits of aquatic PT to help a child with
motor control and sensory integration deficits.

"Evidence Based Aquatic Therapy"
by Jean Irion, PT, EdD, SCS, ATC
This session will discuss the APTA Hooked-on Evidence Database, the
current status of evidence-based practice in aquatic physical
therapy, and the creation of clinical pathways that integrate
evidence in to aquatic practice.
Upon completion of this presentation the participant will be able
to:
•
Utilize
the search APTA Hooked-on-Evidence database to search for aquatic
evidence;
•
Identify
the status of research on aquatic therapy intervention as it relates
to evidence-based practice;
•
Enhance
their ability to interpret aquatic therapy intervention research,
and
•
Create
clinical pathways based upon best aquatic therapy evidence.
