The physical therapy profession is diverse and represents a variety of specialized practice areas.

Reflecting this diversity of practice, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) offers individual memberships in its nationwide special interest organizations. These special interest "sections" provide a forum in which you can exchange ideas and techniques unique to your area of practice, research and education.

The Aquatic Physical Therapy Section is working to define the scope of aquatic physical therapy. Continuing education programs, sponsored by the Section at both the national and regional levels, address the administrative and clinical needs of its members. The Section provides opportunities for networking among its members and is fostering collaborative efforts in outcomes research on the effectiveness of aquatic interventions. Membership in the Aquatic Section also includes access to this web site and a subscription to the Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy.

Our section is committed to supporting you, the aquatic physical therapy practitioner, as you strive to provide your best care to your patients. We are member-centered and are committed to meeting your needs.  Our members have found support and stimulation from many of the following Section sponsored programs:

-- Our educational programming at CSM, regional courses, and audio courses.

-- Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy
, our peer reviewed journal, offering original research relevant to the practice of aquatic physical therapy.

-- “Waterlines”, our Section electronic newsletter, offers practical information as well as Section information and news.

-- Awards such as the Curillo and Rioutti research award for exceptional contributions to the Section and a clinical excellence award.

-- Nominating process which is the vehicle to becoming actively involved in an elected position or serving on a committee.

Probably the greatest benefit of membership, however, is networking with fellow aquatic professionals just like you and sharing successes.  Other benefits include our role in advocacy in reimbursement issues and in representation through our lobbyist at the capitol.

You are also kept informed as our profession expands and helps shape the future. We offer the very best in continuing education and programming related to aquatic physical therapy practice at the Combined Sections meeting.

The Section on Aquatics is continuing to have a global impact through sharing of information and clinical skills with therapists and other members of the international health care community.

This impact will only occur through active involvement of members like you.  Plan now to attend CSM or Annual Conference. Come join us at a Section business meeting at one of those conferences and meet new colleagues, discuss the issues you care about and help this Section’s leadership meet your needs.
